Stoke Church started in 1975 as one of 4 congregations born out of the Warrington Church, which for 10 years had been the only church in the North West. Like most congregations in the WCG, people traveled from a very wide area (Burton-on-Trent, Shrewsbury, Crewe and Stockport, to name a few). We met in the Stoke Town Hall - a grand but very austere grey stone Victorian building, and not always the warmest place in the winter months. However, in the early 1990’s the Town Hall was given a multi-million pound upgrade with an EU grant, and the cost of hall hire went up by 4-fold so we had to find a new hall fast. We moved into Whitmore Village Hall in 1992, and have been there ever since. It has served us well and is excellent for socials, but we now realize that meeting in a very small community is not the best place to fulfill the Great Commission. We moved back into the Stoke area to a Methodist Church Hall in Wolstanton where we meet once a month. We also visit 4 sheltered accommodation and retirement complexes in the Stoke area and across the border in Shropshire, where we have a worship service every 2 months or so. Roger Heath |
