Southampton Congregation

Church HistoryThe Southampton congregation held its first service at the Polygon Hotel, Southampton, in January 1975. Royston Page and Richard Plache conducted that first service. Most of the members at that inaugural meeting had previously attended Godalming church, but the new location meant that some members from the Isle of Wight and Dorset could now attend more regularly. Later that year David House was appointed Pastor; and he and his wife Valerie served the Southern Area churches of Godalming, Reading, and Southampton for ten years before being re-assigned to the West Country.

During those years the number of members grew steadily to about 100 and in the autumn of 1985, Robin and Shirley Jones arrived to take care of the Southern Area including Southampton. They served there until autumn 1993, when Barry and Thelma Bourne moved down from pastoring London to live in Southampton and assume pastoral responsibilities for the Southern Area.

Bournemouth congregation was formed in early 1998 and about 30 members from Southampton formed the basis of the new congregation. Peter Noon became pastor of Southampton at the beginning of 1998 and currently serves there with his wife Mary. The church has been meeting in the light and spacious music room of Tauntons College in Southampton for a number of years now, and current membership is about 35 in total.
