Hello.
One of the best images in the news last week was of children peering out of the windows of a bus in India. They were dressed up as Mahatma Gandhi. 485 children were involved and went on a peace walk to commemorate the anniversary of Gandhi's death. To dress in his image is a mark of respect, and a tribute to his teachings.
Gandhi had something to say about Christ and Christians. He said, "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ". Gandhi liked what Jesus had to say, especially the liberating sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5. His view was that Jesus belonged to the world, not just to Christianity, and he was right in this. Also, what he said about Christians being so unlike Christ rings a bell, does it not?
The biblical writer, Paul, saw this difficulty too. Therefore Paul told the early Christians to "put on Christ". He did not mean literally to dress up like Christ. He meant to let Christ live through us, to witness to what Jesus taught by the way we live.
This week "put on" Jesus.
Let Jesus live his life through you.
Kind regards,
James.
